i’ve done some reading into some of the old posts about this and there was some good conversation and a few guys that appeared to get it working, but with some bugs/draw backs on boot.
Has anyone perfected the GPS to integrate with the Precision Planting 20/20 montiors yet? I have a gen 2. I was trying to find a really good write up of what is needed, and possibly a step by step guide.
My searching might not have been too great, but i didn’t find anything exactly as stated above, and was curious if anyone has got it working bug free, and intergrated well to have it not freeze. I would assist in a write up if ayone wanted to help me make one. Planning to switch my planter to Vdrives this winter, and use 20/20. I already have an RTK base staiton, and have been using AOG to autostear plant in my 4640, so I was thinking it would be silly to buy the expesive precision GPS when i already have a good one in the cab.
I used GPSOUT, USB to 9 pin serial converter and then plugged in the precision planting 9-pin serial to 4 pin round connector. It wasn’t perfect, but worked well enough for planting. Every once in a while it would drop, I’d need to stop, back up and restart. After I played with the Baud settings (19.200 seemed to work best) it was tolerable. Agree would be nice to have a bullet proof soution, but I am planning on running it again next year.
I tried using GPS_OUT but it didnt work well with my gen 2. Speed would jump around causing inaccurate yield data. Haven’t tried planting with it though.
I have it working on a single gps aio v4.5 board. Output comes from uart 2 on f9p. Then goes to Max3232 rs232 to ttl adapter. Uart 2 has to be configured with u-center. It has worked flawlessly for me.
the drop has me concerned, because with planting the speed has to be pretty spot on or the unit stops planting. Using PP’s cheap gps puck caused me a few minor issues planting this year with the delay it took to get speed and starting the V-drives. I have a few start areas where there is 5 to 10 feet with now seed at the headlands. I’m hoping using my AG open can help that with RTK. The other big thing is i couldn’t use swatch control with their GPS puck because it would shut row 1 or 6 off thinking i was overlaping a previous planted area which i wasn’t, just not accurate enough of a GPS.
DLT00, I’m currently single gps with IMU, using the miro 4.5 board i believe. I built it about 4 years ago. I have RTK via base station at my house that is broadcasing via the Xbee radios. for one of my farther fields i have a portable basestation i built in a pelican case that also has an xbee that i put in a specific location of that field every year and manually enter its coordinates.
I used it this year for the first time for Precision Planting. Gen 3 monitor though with VDrives with swath control on. I didn’t drop once in my case with the 300 acres we planted with it. If you are on single antenna you should be fine. From what I understand it is the 2 antenna profile that has the biggest issues. From what I read I believe the Gen 2 was less finicky than the Gen 3 but I also think one of the more recent updates to GPS OUT fixed some issues with Gen 3 and that made me feel better about moving forward with it. You can also turn simulated mode on in GPS OUT to test without it being in the tractor or sitting in the yard to make sure it works. Also just so you know if you are in the states the simulated mode for GPS OUT will show as KPH for the simulated speed but the monitor is smart enough to convert it to MPH. I was a little concerned at first the numbers didn’t match but figured this out. I was basically in the same boat as you this year worrying if it was going to work.
My tablet had a serial out so I ended up using that. However most likely you don’t as most tablets don’t have them now days. Just pick up a good USB to serial adaptor and if you can get one of the universal GPS cables that Precision sells, one of the two plugs on that cable will work with it no problem. It probably isn’t to hard to make either but in my case the dealer just gave me one.
Also just to add to this for what I was doing I was going around 5 MPH the majority of the time. The only time I would slow is at the end row and maybe was going maybe 2-3 MPH.
