I am fairly new to AgOpenGPS and working on setting up auto-steer for my older John Deere 6400. I am planning to use AgOpenGPS with an Arduino-based setup and want to make sure I pick the right GPS receiver. I have seen a lot of mentions of u-blox F9P…, but there are also cheaper alternatives like M8T or even some RTK-capable units from other brands.
Since my goal is basic fieldwork like tillage and spraying (not super high-precision planting), do I need an F9P or is something else good enough: ?? Also, what are some good antennas that won’t break the bank but still work reliably: ??
I would really appreciate any advice or links to build guides from folks who’ve done (link removed) similar installs. Just trying to learn and avoid expensive mistakes.
Go the F9P, you can get the budget small black antenna with it and it just works when configured with the tool. Accuracy out of the box without any sort of correction is about 30cm so good enough for tillage if thats all you want. Biggest reason to do it is that the v4.5 board is already set up for it and the whole system is designed to use the F9P.
It was the biggest cost of my system aside from my keya wheel, but I bought an f9p, keya and all the other hardware for less than the cost of a new genuine Trimble AG-25 in Australia, it might seem like a big cost but its worth it to buy it once and buy it right!
