My tool steering attempt - spring 2025

Hi all, I am midway through planting season, and one of my last parts came to be able to try tool steering. I am eager to get any tips or input from anyone. I am using two separate instances of Ag open. A few questions I have:

Do I need a Was on the tractor tounge?
I am guessing the best way to get the same ab lines into both computers is to make the field and all lines on one computer then transfer the field file to the other computer?

Any other tips for a toolsteering newbe? I may try the development version if I can figure out how to make it work just so I don’t have to transfer the field between computers.

one odd thing I found, I could not get a green compass on my toolsteering computer until I shorted pin 8 to ground (emulating steerswitch). After that I could just switch it on the screen.

Thanks!

I have more questions than answers! What type of valve do you use? And how are the hydraulics plumbed?

Same argos hytos valve as is on the hydraulic steering blocks from baraki. some friends that know more about hydraulics then I do said that it was a D03 valve, so I just put it on a d03 base and plumbed it in. The tractor only has two remotes, so I added a splitter on one of them so I can either send oil to the autohitch or to the planter markers. I don’t need them much, but wanted to have them if I did. Does that answer your questions?

Sure thing thanks! Where do you order those valves and blocks?

Fluid power solutions sold me the valve, I made an account with them, 292$

Bought the 81$ d03 base block from Georgetown hydraulic, they are a mailorder by phone only company.

Thanks

Played with the development version some today, I don’t think I have the udp connections figured out yet. I think I will go back to running a dual system. We will see

went back to a dual system, laid out the field lines with disk, copied field to my tool steering computer. worked good for a couple rounds, then started swinging hard right Left Right evrey 10-20 feet through the field. that made some real zig-zag rows! had a rain coming, didnt want to deal with figuring out the problem right then, so i locked the drawbar in the center and finished the field without toolsteering. have some WAS coming tomorrow, if i get to it i may try and install one before planting beans, and see if that fixes it.

added a WAS under the tractor near the drawbar pivot and finally got tool steering working. planted about 20 acres with it. worked on tuning settings, couldnt get it to steer quite all the way. right at the end of the field i finally found what I think i needed with the counts per degree setting. i think its going to steer pretty good!

Well it worked for a few hours, then It developed an intermittent Ethernet connection. Never seen that before. Had a rain coming, and a lot to do, so I locked the drawbar solid and planted the rest without toolsteer. Got done planting yesterday evening, so I will have to resume toolseering next year. so far I have learned a lot, and was seeing XTE values of 0 or 1 almost always, except on curves, where I ran out adjustment room on my drawbar.

I’ve been wondering where to put it, seems so obvious now, thanks for the idea.

The WAS? It works fine there, it doesn’t move much, in theory it would probably be better if it had more travel, but I didn’t see another place that would work. I need to get a skid plate on the bottom of the tractor to protect it. Its in one of the lowest places on the tractor. I think I pretty much maxed out the counts per degree setting, i am guessing that is because there isn’t as much movement as there is on a front axel.
