Nmea input to opengrade with Sveaverken F100 Auto Steer System

As title states I am trying to assist a friend with getting started using opengrade. He has a Sveaverken F100 Auto Steer System and we attempted to connect to opengrade. His system has a serial port to export nmea, and we used a cablecreations serial to usb adapter to connect to the laptop. installed the driver for the adapter, set all baud rates the same, (device manager, opengrade and on gps). and set the gps to export gga and vtg messages at 10 hz. when connected the nmea string field shows a stream of ??? so it seems like its connecting, just not the right messages?
ps. he has no rtk as of yet, but we should still be able to connect to opengrade or agio without, correct?
my experience using opengrade with the f9p has been great once i set it to high precision mode, and in my nmea string field it shows many random symbols, not just question marks.

figured it out, the serial db9 cable was incorrect for our application. tx and rx lines needed to be switched
